ThermoAnalytics, Inc. of Houghton County, MI was awarded "Smartzone Company of the Year" by Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm at the 2005 Business Success Celebration. The award was presented at the State Capitol Rotunda in Lansing, along with 10 other awards for different categories of business development. In her comments at the ceremony, Governor Granholm stated, "My goal is to transform Michigan's economy into one that thrives in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. In different ways, these companies are demonstrating levels of innovation and excellence that can only help Michigan prosper."

The awards recognize companies that have demonstrated innovation and achievement in their respective fields and was sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Foundation. ThermoAnalytics was able to take part in the Michigan SmartZone Business Accelerator Program (SZBA) that was provided through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and Michigan Technological University. "Our business was at a critical stage - six years after our start-up - and the SZBA program resulted in eight new full time staff members (33% growth)," states ThermoAnalytics' President Keith Johnson. "This required a major facility expansion at our Houghton County headquarters as well as opening up a Detroit office. Prospects for the future are excellent with continued growth in staff and revenues. We endorse this program and others like it so that more Michigan-based companies can achieve second-stage growth."
