  • Combining Simulation and Testing – practical approaches for developing measurement plans, pre-conditioning subjects, selecting appropriate comfort metrics, and aligning simulation results with evaluation procedures such as ISO 14505-2, ASTM F2371, and Green NCAP.
  • Pre-processing – advanced workflows using the Human Thermal Clothing Manager, including clothing and material definition and scenario setup.
  • Analysis – comfort prediction, moisture modeling and transport, and specialized scenarios including firefighter and medical environments.
  • Post-processing – insightful visualization and interpretation using the Thermal Comfort Analysis Tool to support confident design decisions.

SMART HVAC & Energy Management

This technical session highlights practical approaches for connecting 3D thermal simulation with system-level tools to enable faster iteration, more realistic drive-cycle studies, and comfort-aware energy decisions.

This technical session explores end-to-end workflows for HVAC and energy management, including:

  • Coupling with System Tools – defining exchange variables and interfacing with common environments such as GT-Suite, MATLAB, KULI, Modelon, AMESIM, and Python.
  • Multi-Tool HVAC Coupling Workflows – advanced workflows that incorporate multiple coupling approaches, including using Cool3D (from GT-Suite) and RapidFlow (built-in flow solver).
  • Full-Vehicle Energy Management – extending coupling strategies to full-vehicle studies, including comfort-based controllers and energy management trade-offs.
  • AI-Enabled Smart HVAC Modeling – creating cabin ROMs (surrogates, digital twins, neural networks) and coupling them with HVAC models for rapid exploration of control strategies.

Coverage spans vehicle- and battery-level challenges across realistic drive cycles, including:

  • Vehicle-Level xEV Thermal Workflows – underhood/underbody heat protection, exhaust modeling, and automated thermal management workflows.
  • Drive-Cycle Simulation – applying realistic drive cycles to evaluate thermal response and operating constraints over time.
  • Battery Thermal Management – fast-charging simulation, bus bar thermal design, and high-voltage cable modeling to support robust pack and system design.
  • Battery Energy Management – combined drive-cycle modeling to understand energy trade-offs and interactions between cabin comfort and battery performance.
  • Battery Lifetime and Reliability – connecting thermal behavior to lifetime estimation across automotive drive cycles.
